Lewis Hamilton negou que ter marcado a pole position do GP dos Emirados Árabes tenha sido tão fácil quanto pareceu, por causa da vantagem de seis décimos sobre Sebastian Vettel, da RBR, o segundo no grid. O piloto da McLaren larga, em Abu Dhabi, na frente pela terceira vez na temporada, mas admitiu que deveria ter optado por uma carga maior de combustível em seu carro.

- Como eu sempre digo, nunca é facil, mas foi tão divertido quanto pareceu. O carro está, provavelmente, em sua melhor fase no ano. Estou confortável neste circuito. Com essa volta, pensamos que poderíamos ter mais combustível no carro, mas acho que não fomos tão agressivos na tática. A volta foi muito boa. Tudo poderia acontecer. É fácil cometer erros aqui mas, por sorte, estou feliz com o tempo - diz Hamilton, na entrevista coletiva oficial após o treino classificatório.

Após a pole, Hamilton elogiou o circuito novamente. Para ele, o traçado proporcionará uma corrida divertida neste domingo, na estreia do circuito da Yas Marina, em Abu Dhabi, na Fórmula 1.

- Sempre tentamos melhorar os circuitos e as zebras deveriam ser boas aqui, mas acho que eles fizeram um trabalho perfeito aqui com o traçado. Para correr, é muito seguro. Teremos algumas oportunidades de ultrapassagens e a prova deve ser muito boa.

Felipe Massa vai dar a bandeirada no GP Brasil 2009

Fora das pistas desde julho, quando sofreu grave acidente no treino para o Grande Prêmio da Hungria, o piloto brasileiro Felipe Massa disse que se sente completamente recuperado e preparado para retornar à Fórmula 1, caso tivesse a permissão dos médicos e da FIA (Federação Internacional de Automobilismo).

Questionado sobre seu retorno, Massa destacou que não adiantaria pedir à Ferrari para ter a chance de correr em Interlagos, palco de duas vitórias do piloto brasileiro nos três anos anteriores.

"Poderia correr aqui tranquilamente. No entanto, por haver riscos de sofrer um outro acidente, eles (médicos e Ferrari) preferem esperar um pouco mais", disse Felipe Massa.
Queria voltar a guiar. Não senti nada de estranho, tanto no kart, como no treino de Fórmula 1, completou o piloto brasileiro.

Sebastian Vettel wins Japanese GP to cut the gap on Jenson Button

Jenson Button's slow march towards the world title moved another step closer to completion in Japan, despite Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel winning from pole. Button, finishing down in eighth, saw his lead cut by a point, but remains 14 clear with only two races to go.

Vettel kept alive his outside chance of winning the drivers' championship, moving to within 16 points of Button. The German crossed the line ahead of Jarno Trulli's Toyota with Lewis Hamilton in third for McLaren.

Vettel's third win of the season helped to close the gap at the top but Button's Brawn team-mate, Rubens Barrichello, remains the Briton's closest challenger having crossed the line in seventh.

Brawn could have wrapped up the constructors' title but were denied after the safety car was brought on to the track with five laps to go. Button, however, was unhappy with Williams' Nico Rosberg, for allegedly setting his fastest sector time while drivers were under restrictions – an issue the race stewards looked into but upheld the result, clearing Rosberg of accusations that he did not slow when yellow flags were waved after a late accident.

If Rosberg, who finished fifth, had been demoted or disqualified, the Brawn GP cars would have been promoted and earned enough points to clinch the constructors' championship. As it stands only successive one-two finishes by Red Bull in the remaining two races, plus a blank for Brawn, can prevent Brawn becoming the first team in F1 history to take the constructors' title in their debut year.

"Always, when you think someone has done something wrong and they did not get penalised, you feel disappointed," Button said. "But I don't think it will change things massively."

Data evidence from Rosberg's car showed a low fuel message on the telemetry in his car had overridden the message telling him yellow flags were out. "The telemetry data shows that the driver, from a safety point of view, had reacted adequately to the yellow flags and safety car boards," a stewards' statement said.

Brawn will need only half a point more to claim the crown when the teams are in Brazil in two weeks' time, while Button could secure his first world title merely by keeping pace with Barrichello and Vettel.

Sebastian Vettel takes pole in Japan 2009

Sebastian Vettel showed he still has the stomach for a championship fight by claiming pole position for tomorrow's Japanese grand prix. The Red Bull driver leads the grid from Jarno Trulli in second with Lewis Hamilton in third.

Jenson Button, who can win the world championship title if he finishes five points ahead of Rubens Barrichello, could only manage seventh place on the grid while Barrichello starts in fifth.

In an incident-packed session that saw three red flags and two drivers taken to hospital, Vettel held his nerve to post a time of one minute 32.160 secs and keep his slim title hopes alive.

Vettel admitted he had enjoyed the rub of the green during the session. "We were quite lucky, the car worked fantastically, probably the most difficult was Q3. The tyres don't last more than one lap really," he said.

Timo Glock and Jamie Alguersuari had already brought out two red flags due to heavy accidents in the previous two runs and, when Heikki Kovalainen induced a third stoppage after sliding off at the troublesome Degner curves early in Q3, the stage was set for a dramatic shootout.

Q2 was red flagged with just over 11 minutes to go when Alguersuari ran wide exiting turn eight and drove straight on into the tyre barrier but the Spaniard managed to walk away from the wreckage of his Toro Rosso and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Another red flag came shortly afterwards when Glock ran straight on at the final corner and smashed into the barrier, destroying the front of his Toyota. The German was quickly attended to by marshals, who covered the scene with a white sheet as a worried Toyota garage looked on.

Replays showed Glock managed to remove the steering wheel and place it on top of the nose of his car shortly after the impact before he was stretchered away in an ambulance. It was later confirmed he was transferred to a hospital in Yokkaichi having sustained a left-leg wound and complaining of back pain but, otherwise, his general condition was okay.

Vettel trails Button by 25 points with a maximum of 30 left on offer, but the German enhanced his chances of making the title a three-way battle as the season draws to a close after leading all three qualifying sessions.

"With three races to go, it's quite a big gap [to championship leader Button], so all we can do is race and try to win and we are in the best starting position. We will see. It's a long race, tough on the tyres and tough on the drivers."

Lewis Hamilton scored his second win in five races at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Remarkably Jenson Button emerged from the mayhem to finish fifth and extend his lead in the world championship.

All three of his title rivals threw away chances to take a big bite out of his points lead.

Having been handed a championship lifeline by Brawn’s disastrous qualifying performance which saw Button start 11th, the Red Bull duo failed to capitalise.

Sebastian Vettel damaged his car on the kerbs and drove through the pit lane too fast during his second stop and was hit with a drive through on lap 39 that ended his chances of victory.

He battled back to fourth but now trails Button by 25 points with three races remaining.

Mark Webber’s brakes exploded on lap 46 and he went home empty handed on a day when he, too could have emerged as victor.

Instead the championship leader emerged from the chaos having gambled on different strategy to his teammate a place and one point ahead

Conscious of their miraculous escape the team radioed him laps from the end: "Just bring the car home now, just bring it home."

If there is a watershed race for Button in the world championship then this may be it.

With the odds against him he emerged with an extended lead in the title chase.

Barrichello, suffering brake problems had hoped to catch him in the final race but his own car had the same problems.

Button now has 84 points and Barrichello 69.

With three rounds remaining Button need only score five points more than his teammate at the next race to win the world title.

Timo Glock was second for Toyota to match the team’s best-ever result.

Fernando Alonso, last year’s winner after his team cheated, was third, Vettel fourth, Button fifth, Barrichello sixth, Kovalainen seventh and Kubica’s BMW eighth.

It was an eventful day and Button triumphed over the odds from the start.

He overcame the first perilous hurdle when he stayed out of trouble off the start line.

Buried in mid-field there was every chance he could become entangled in someone else’s accident in the charge off the grid but it was, for a chance, an incident free opening to the gruelling street race..

There were chuckles and jokes that Alonso would be piling into the wall on Lap 14 after Renault’s newboy Romain Grosjean pitted within a handful of laps of the start.

But rather than a repeat of last year distasteful incident the Frenchman had simply toasted his brakes and his race was over.

So much for being a superior replacement for the unfortunate Piquet.

But the real street circuit drama wasn’t long in coming.

On lap 21 Adrian Sutil tried a massively optimistic overtaking manoeuvre on Jaime Alguersuari without even effectively getting alongside the Toro Rosso and was pitched into a spin of his own making.

But the biggest victim was poor Nick Heidfeld. He came steaming into Turn 14 and as Alguersuari lurched back into life he collided with the passing BMW, ending both their races.

The Spaniard was not done though. In the chaos of the safety car pit stops he managed to leave before he got the signal and ran over his own refuelling man.

While the circuit was cleared Button stormed into the pits to refuel.

The biggest loser was again Nico Rosberg., The man who could have won last year but for Renault’s cheating had been pit with a stop go penalty for crossing the white line on exiting the pit lane after refuelling.

Unable to perform his penalty until after the safety car period he dived in and instantly dropped from second to 14th – his chances of victory over.

And Sebastian Vettel had only himself to blame when his chances were wrecked.

Chasing Hamilton for the lead the you German drove too fast through the pit lane on his second stop on lap 39 and was hit with a drive through penalty.

The lifeline thrown by Brawn’s chaos the day before had been squandered.

He needed a big helping of points to keep to slim title hopes alive.

But when he emerged on lap 43 in ninth, behind Button his chances had been put to the sword.

The damage done to his car in his charge affected the handling for the remainder for the race.

Button went home a happy man on a day that he started with many misgivings..

Lewis Hamilton secured pole for the Singapore grand prix but there was disappointment for championship leader, Jenson Button, whose world title hopes were dealt a blow by qualifying in 12th place on the grid.

Hamilton, whose engineers worked through the night to fit a new chassis for his McLaren, impressed in practice and took that form into qualifying as he clocked a time of 1min 47.891sec in Q3 at the Marina Bay street circuit.

In contrast, Button had struggled in practice after his Brawn car had been switched to the same set-up as team-mate Rubens Barrichello. Though they reverted it to yesterday's settings, the 29-year-old failed to threaten, with Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull taking second and the Williams of Nico Rosberg third.

Barrichello, who will be looking to cut into Button's 14-point lead tomorrow, was fifth fastest before crashing with 26 seconds of qualifying remaining but will start from 10th on the grid tomorrow after being hit with a five-place grid penalty for changing his gearbox prior to the session.

Giancarlo Fisichella Q&A: A positive first day at Ferrari

The Italian driver’s dream has finally come true for Giancarlo Fisichella and at Monza on Friday he was obviously enjoying every minute of it. His lap times may not have been amazing, but the Ferrari is a distinctly different car to his previous Force India and coming to terms with KERS is something that needs time. The overall feeling was that red suits him well…

Q: Giancarlo, how was the first day with Ferrari?
Giancarlo Fisichella: This morning when I arrived at the track, especially going down to the garage and the car I was quite nervous, but very concentrated. And the feeling was great. In general I'm quite positive about the day, and I just need to improve at some points, but apart from that it has been a good day.

Q: How was the feeling going out in a Ferrari for the first time in front of the Italian crowd?
GF: Well, actually I was so concentrated when I was doing the first lap this morning that I was more concentrated on the car than realizing the people around the circuit. But for sure I felt them afterwards when I returned to the garage, and especially when I walked around. They are so friendly, which is very nice.

Q: Force India are obviously very quick here again - do you have concerns that your old team and car will end up in a better position than you are able to achieve now?
GF: The fact that they are very strong here as well is not surprising. Force India was very strong already for the last couple of races, where we have made several steps forward and of course my last race was just fantastic. I knew that they would be quick here, and I know that they are probably lighter than Ferrari today in terms of fuel load, but for sure they will be very competitive tomorrow.

Q: What was the main change in respect of the car?
GF: It's a different circuit so it is hard to say, as the level of downforce is much less here. It is a completely different car, which means that the reaction going into the corners is very much different. You have to work much more in the Ferrari with the steering wheel and the gear switches compared to the Force India. With the Force India car I was just concentrating on the driving, here I am quite busy. It's important to do another good amount of laps and improve a little bit more.

Q: It's your first time with KERS. How difficult is it to know when to have it charged and when to use it?
GF: During the whole session I've been in touch with my engineer, who's been very informative over the radio and I was following his instructions. It's not too difficult - you just have to be very concentrated on when to use it. In the afternoon I was mainly doing the job on my own without Rob Smedley instructing me on the radio, so I'm improving all the time and that's the right direction.

Q: How is it to back with Rob?
GF: It's great to work with him, because straightaway I've had a good feeling. He knows how I work, and I know how he works.
